Can we determine the L, a and b values using Lovibond tintometer model F? As there is provision for measuring the colour in the form of red, yellow, blue and neutral units. if yes , what is formula for converting these value to. L a b values.
The model F is a high specification colorimeter based on the visual comparison of coloured samples with coloured glass filter combinations. A colorimeter is usually a filter based instrument and as such is does not generate precise Lab values. The Lovibond filters are however a well-designed and standardized product and each filter set is graded to conform to a published R,G,B colour identity scale. Their R,G,B colour values are therefore widely taken to be acceptable colour measurements and used in a significant range of industrial applications.
Lovibond also sell true spectrophotometers such as the pfx 880 model which can output full spectral curves and CIE L*a*b* colour co-ordinates.
Returning now to your Model F you might obtain L*a*b* values with a specified (but not precise) provenance as follows:- Step 1. Get Lovibond Ltd to measure the spectral curves of your particular filter set. Step 2. Create (or acquire from me) a spreadsheet colorimetric model, (see my Model 1 RG post). Step 3. Make your model interpolate between your derived calibration points and output useable CIE Standard Observer L*a*b* values.
