Vanessa, there was an intense debate on precisely this subject in Melbourne/Australia quite recently - the road taken there seems to be more high rises (à la Hong Kong), whereas some were advocating a more 'European' style, low rise development.

Australia is an interesting lab for this, whereby some cities are totally high rise oriented (Gold Cost city, e.g.) and some other more low-rise, sprawling suburban (Sydney). I'm sure you could find resources and views of the debate on the Web.

This seems to be a neglected topic in Australian policy associated with urban consolidation.  i can tell you more where it is NOT discussed!

Dear Vanessa, if u try to justify your very first statement that building vertical neighborhoods increase population density, i think it will be difficult to prove through case studies. For example, buildings in mumbai may not be as taller as in manhatten, but mumbai's density is higher than manhatten. But if you are not comparing different cities and increase the density of a particular city by increasing the building heights, then according to me, except the roads, all other amenities like water, sewage, natural gas etc will increase proportionally, keeping the per capita consumption constant.

suggest you try Fishman, R 1987, Bourgeois Utopias: The Rise and Fall of Suburbia, Basic Books, New York.  The chapter on Los Angeles shows the Automobile Club Plan of 1937 (for a superimposed freeway network) had an effect on residential development in that city as it superseded the rather extensive (for its time) tram system then in place.

Mega Indian cities face acute shortage of infrastructure and are characterised by dualism with the presence of IT industries alongside low level of literacy and new  condominium developments overlooking informal slum developments. Agglomeration economies generated by concentration of mega cities and their expansion due to massive investment by governments at various levels and also due to private sector investments have resulted in horizontal expansion of cities. Resulting in formation of mega cities such as Mumbai surrounded by Thane and Kalyan-Dombivili both million plus cities.

My RG colleagues have suggested proper references to this subject so I shall give a simple note about my observation of the city in which my university is located. When I started work in 1984, the population was ~ 80,000 with a very little number of tower buildings. At present, the population almost doubled & the number of towers increased. The results are overcrowding in city center, distribution of water is rotational now, renting prices went up, more mess , faster risky movement of automobiles in more empty streets, and above all negative attitudes(such as greed, fierce competition, nervousness and intolerance).

I am thinking that one could do ones own research by going to any county building/ tax collector/ assessor office, choose a demographic and research the general market value of real estate sold in a specific neighborhood. This is what real estate agents do to either buy property for investment or personal assets. As for researching population patterns and or growth this can be done at the same offices. Good Luck!

My interest is exactly understanding what occurs in other cities with like or not São Paulo.

Here in São Paulo, the great advance of the real estate market increased the population and thus the number of cars on the roads, gas and energy consumption, and also water and sewage networks. This density potential density is often not taken into account.
