Normalization using an internally passed chemical can produce results for a 24hr period thus making total metabolism understood. Know this has been published but can't find the manuscript(s). Anyone have it handy by chance? Was from early 2013 late 2012.
I assume you want to measure the concentration of the metabolites. You can use any internal standard as long as it does not interfere with your sample….. or does not overlap with your sample resonances (ideally).
Another way is using an external standard. This also works quite well. But you must measure the 90 degree 1H pulse of the standard and also of your sample. (You can just get the 90 deg of water in both samples). That has been well described see for example Bruker documentation. Given the fact that you are working with urine (salt) the 90 deg pulse for your urine sample is quite different from your (external) standard. i.e. you must determine both for the method to work.

Sorry no I'm not looking for an internal standard to measure metabolite concentrations. I'm looking for a non-metabolizable compound to be ingested and to be excreted in order to normalize the 24 hr metabolic output of an individual. The person-to-person variability is what needs to be normalized. There was a paper out in 2013, but I lost the reference dealing with compounds that took 24hrs to be completely excreted by the individual.
