Doctors blade method is used for making thin layers, and I think it is not possible to make thin films with this technique, because thin films are normally deposited by chemical or physical vapor deposition techniques.
Doctors blade is a fine blade, you can cut thin slices, (like you are cutting a carrot with a knife). In equipments such an ultramicrotome you can prepare thin film sections of samples from life science departments. On you tube you can find many live videos on ultramirotome, and they use a very fine knige edge bycleaving normal thick glass.
In tape casting methods also probably they use a doctor's blade to prepare thin layers, please check on this how the tape casting method is developed.
