Until now the articles published in our scientific journal Avances en Química (open access, indexed in Redalyc, Latindex, Scopus, etc.) do not have DOI numbers due to lack of funds to pay for them.
There are several options. Options where there might be no costs:
-Consider a publishing partner like for example “Journal of Biosciences” (https://www.ias.ac.in/Journals/Journal_of_Biosciences/ ) that works under the umbrella of Springer (https://www.springer.com/journal/12038 ). Or SciELO (https://www.scielo.org/en/ ) that seems to be organized per country/region, see for example Colombia (http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?lng=en ). The partners might cover the costs.
-Consider Zenodo https://ojs-services.com/journals-publication-indexing/how-to-get-doi-for-free/ This is a free service.
Options when there are costs (when you go for CrossRef https://www.crossref.org/fees/ ) which might be covered by:
-Find a sponsor. Approach representatives of companies in your region (Latin America) like Sigma, Perkin Elmer etc. and offer them a logo on your website.
-Ask for a small fee (for foreign authors). Somewhere between 25-50 USD should be enough.
-A publishing partner (see above).
-Actively approach internationally (US-based researchers, European researchers, researchers from Mexico, India, Japan etc.) and asked them a voluntary donation. Your Scopus index once they can publish a paper in your journal is a big incentive for many of them (and a small donation of let’s say 100 USD should not be a big problem).
Yes, Dr Cristóbal José Lárez Velásquez , 100 USD is a very moderate charge. It is affordable for most of the authors from Latin America. Certainly, i will consider Avances en Química for future articles. I appreciate this journal due to the good quality and rigorous peer review.
Thank you for your response and for his positive opinion on our journal Avances en Química. Charging authors a fee would be the last alternative to consider because we do not want the journal to stop being open access.
