I would like to get salmonella counting done after administering yeast culture to Japanese quails from their intestinal scrapings..........I doubt which media would be best for it?? whether HE agar or BGA or something else?
We used Brilliant Green Agar extensively for many many chicken experiments at VIDO-InterVac in Canada and it worked very well. I recently came to know of Hektoen Agar - I have not used it personally but those who have used it really like it!
A specific amount of intestinal content can be diluted in PBS and 10 folds serial dilution can be done. 10 micro litre from each dilution can be plated on Hektoen Enteric Agar and keep for overnight incubation. Based on the CFU in each dilution we can estimate the Salmonella count in the intestinal content.
