When we think that Science is "man-made" and dependent on human work for research, one could conclude that our rapidly "changing" and evolving World can change humans and their approach to scientific research.
1. Can we change our present state of things, through positive or negative influence in the World where we live and research, thus running the risk of changing the state of Science itself, as we know it?
2. Can or should we use our influence in Educating future researchers in their role in future Science?
3. Can we revert the present developments ?

This question is my Christmas present to all my good friends in RG.
I hadn't posted a new question for a long time. But as the New Year aproaches, we tend to review our goals and objectives. In personal terms, this implies a review of my present objectives as a scientific researcher, and the Definition of Science, itself. (I find that, even if I don't obtain the best of results, as it is, I should always go on, even if just to help educate new generations of futures scientific researchers, that will perform better...)
I wish you all the best for the New Year !
Maria:
Many happy returns to you and your wonderful family! Yes indeed, Science can and should change the World to actually save it from self-destruction. I really think the latter task should be our top priority for 2017 as time waits for no one.
Warm regards,
Debra

Thank you, dear Debra.
We share the "New Atlantis", as a goal to "our" Modern Science...
Best wishes for you !
Rather than just changing our world, science is to improve it, to take care of it, to enhance its meaning for us all. That is what science is all about.
Yet, many people are afraid of change - and novelty.
I think the very first step to think is - if the world actually need to change. Why? And, if the change needs to take place - since when in the history - day 1 of the world, 1 million years after, 10 million, 1 billion, 2, 3, 4...now? Since when we need to think of the change at least conceptually.
Dear María:
Thanks for the invitation and Happy New Year ! and ¡ Feliz Año Nuevo ! to you.
I agree with the interesting article in The New Atlantis that science is not morally neutral.
Science has changed the world and will continue to do it. But scientists should not remain indifferent to the uses that others make of their discoveries and advances.
We should extend scientific rationality to those goals, to prevent others from using the rational means we develop to achieve irrational ends.
I think this implies that science should not see itself as an sphere independent of the rest of society and that it must work to establish more and better relations with the humanities, politics, the media and civil society.
Graciás, dear José !
Indeed, your contributes always make me think and rethink...
No human deed should be performed without Morals...
As I read you, I could not help remembering Alfred Nobel. He, indeed changed the World from his inventions, but with undesired bad influence from malignant bias and misuse of his original "explosive" discoveries. (I owe my Father's life to the correct use of Nitroglycerine, that prevented several of his heart strokes from evolving...)
Furthermore, the present scientific World is strongly indepted to Noble, for creating the concept of yearly Laureate Scientists, that permits them to persue work in a field that can further positively influence the World. Those yearly awrds also interact with future scientists with the positive influence to bring hope to their works.
Nobel's Science surely influenced the World in a moral way.

Hi Maria, and a very Merry Christmas to you and your family too!
Science does change the world! That genie cannot be put back into the bottle!
I think the purpose of pure science is to gain knowledge, because that is built into our DNA. It is the very fabric of being human, and it seems fundamentally wrong to suggest that this quest should be blocked, for whatever reason.
How science is applied is what I think you are really asking here, and the New Atlantis article you posted covers the subject matter more thoroughly than I could have done. This battle between good and evil is always there, It too defines us. Why should this not also hold for how scientific discoveries are applied? I think it holds for science as it holds in all other facets of the human existence.
I suppose you can also argue that "good" would not even exist, were it not for evil. It's going to be the constant struggle that defines each of us. That's what religions are SUPPOSED to explain to people. Even if quite obviously, the message very often gets garbled.
This is a subtle, incisive question with no obvious answers. In addition to the very interesting as well as helpful answers already given, perhaps there is a bit more to add, especially in light of what @Albert Manfredi has written.
I agree with @Albert Manfredi: ... the purpose of pure science is to gain knowledge..... Changes in the world are sometimes side-effects, not the result of pure scientists attempting to change the world with their science.
Marry Christmas to you all
As Christmas is a time for reunion, I will get together with Carlos Eduardo Maldonado. I like the idea of improving, not changing anything. But science has surely the power to change everything, even ourselves.
Hello Maria,
I think the main goal of science is changing the world for the better,
With science, you can change yourself for the best, and when you change yourself you can change the world.
Regards.
I think that what changes the World is the love, and putting love in the Science we can change the world too. Thank you, Maria, for your question which is interesting.
Dear Maria,
of course science changes the world. But not always to the better way. It´s the job of scientists to take care for their results.
Best wishes to you for christmas and for the coming year.
Hanno
Can / should Science change the World?
Science can change the world depending on how we human beings want to utilize science for a sustainable / better world or abuse science to ruin the world. Beside science, there are other factors which are influencing & changing the world like political agendas, economical competitive advantages, social developments etc. Also science is inseparable from research in which scientific research in complying to research ethics are getting more important ensuring that we are doing the right things.
Real education associated with universal ethical principles and good will (“and on Earth, Peace to Men of Good Will”) can improve effectively the world where we live and the usefulness of the efforts performed for reaching scientific developments. Science without ethics in an environment of falsehood is food for sharks.
http://catholictradition.org/Children/men-goodwill.htm
Good morning !
Thank you sirs, for your great contributes.. Yes, there seams to be no doubt that, when we apply moral and ethics, Science can bring positive influence to the World. It does depend on us, humans, not to let our inevitable negative sides interfere with the Power of scientific kknowledge. Greed, envy, jealousy, or vanity and self-pride that come in the package of human beings are the negative influences that should be kept away from scientific endeavours... Difficult, but certainly not impossible...
Best wishes for all!
Dear Dr. Maria,
I believe science has a large effect on changing the world. As you said, we can change our present state of things, through positive or negative influence in the world where we live and research, thus running the risk of changing the state of Science itself, as we know it.
Dear Maria,
yes definitelly science must change the World. And all scientists (regardless of nationality, faith, race,...) must believe in it, and push all of their efforts in this direction. Only on that way, we all can succeed in this aim.
Because: we all do not need nuclear war but clean and free nuclear energy. For our children and grandchildren...
Best regards and wishes to all.
Igor
Science can change the world around us, but I doubt it can ever succeed in changing 'us'. Despite the strides in science, the core attributes of man will remain the same; the greed, selfishness, complexes e.t.c. At the end of the day, these are the major limitations to what science can accomplish for mankind, in general.
Dear Maria and dear all,
I wish you merry Christmas. Science is an enabler to search for truth and truth is the ultimate judge that dictates us our actions so that they are stable and lasting (as stability is one quasi-measure of truth). Truth is the embodiment of nature which is stubborn and unchangeable regardless of how we perceive it and therefore we can not change the world but we create conditions in accordance with what we think is the truth and hence we align ourselves with the truth of our understanding, regardless of its distance from the natural truth. We therefore change ourselves not truth and so science will not change the world but will make us closer to the natural world. The further we are from science, the further our distance is from truth and hence from the world.
Merry Christmas Dear Maria!
Yes, science is changing the world through research and experimentation by dedicated people. We have to remind ourselves to make science results available to the public through teaching, publications and conferences. We also need to preach the benefits of science to humanity.
However, I meet so many people who doubt that science has any benefits and are suspicious of any achievements, preferring science fiction instead! Thus, our work is also getting harder to convince society of the benefits of science.
We depend on the new generations of students to change the world.
Scientific & technological research development have made our world very small for mobility for human beings . This development has help to make cosmic environment understanding within the reach of human beings they known the understanding of Moon ,Mars space .
With this development how the world can be changed it is only human beings that they can change the atmosphere of the world to make under the rosy fragrance as person i am not pessimistic but i don't expect the present range of human beings who can help to change the environment .
We have not learn enough lesson even for the distance time & experience of world war I & II .Besides why to go for a distance experience of two world wars what we have seen ,observe & also for understanding our feelings of the year now ending 2016 .
With this scientific development may help to change our life in a very fast ,easy ,& convenient manner but it is only the human beings of our world to change & to make for entire human being a place for happy living .
This is my personal opinion
Science can change the World.....without any doubt.
From the stone age to searching life on Planet Mars....Its all due to science.
Science has always had a great impact on developing the society...though we cant rule out some negative impacts of development of science (Like the Heroshima act). science always gives scope to better understanding of the nature...the universe its life.
definitely we should encourage new research and Educate future researchers.
Why would any one want to revert the present developments...when they are good and useful?
Science is a progressive thing...no reverse back in this field...we cant forgo what we have learned and what we have earned..
Yes, Science has changed the world. In future also it will make the life easier and faster.
Yes, Science can change the world. Science has all it takes to change the world and change it positively. One of the greatest threat to the world today is global warming and climate change. Science has told us that we need to go green, we need to use renewable sources of energy, we need to plant more trees, instead of everyone driving himself/herself to work, we need to use mass transport system etc. The problem is that with all thee measures at our disposal, we don't implement.
As we move into the new (it's my prayer that we get there), let's all en-devour to make the world a better place in our individual capacities. Change begins with me.
Merry Christmas and Happy new year.
Dear Maria,
happy Christmas and a good New Year 2017 to you and all as well.
And this is coming to the problem already: what is "good"?
Some say my full bankaccount is good. Next question what is "full"?
Many wish a healthy environment and earth. What is helping the earth and what is not noxious to it? The borderlines are defined by the interests of the party talking.
Everything is flowing (panta rei) and the Dao (Tao) which can be defined is not the Dao.
So we cannot give the answer because like Heisenberg´s Unschärfetheorie you cannot determine location and speed of the same "thing".
BUT still we should try to agree on some basic topics and these should be garded better by everyone individually and from governmental (and UN) side, not to accept wars against men and nature anymore.
Everybody can work for this everywhere and everysecond, while keeping this in her/his mind?!
This could be my wish foe 2017
Dear Maria
If one think science doesn't matter much to all , think again. Science affects us all, every day of the year, from the moment we wake up, all day long, and through the night. Your digital alarm clock, the weather report, the asphalt you drive on, the bus you ride in, your decision to eat a baked potato instead of fries, your cell phone, the antibiotics that treat your sore throat, the clean water that comes from your faucet, and the light that you turn off at the end of the day have all been brought to you courtesy of science. The modern world would not be modern at all without the understandings and technology enabled by science.
Best regards
Dear Maria Bettencourt Pires,
Each year, the Royal Society informs about the latest developments in science and technology that can be widely used in the near future.
We present to you the five most interesting from the list of 2016, which is about to leave the laboratory walls and will be tested in real conditions.
Five scientific discoveries that can change the world:
1. Space cleaner
Empty shell rockets, dead satellites, pieces of glass and tiny pieces of paint - all that flies in space and is about 7 thousand tons of debris -. It is so much humanity has managed namusorit for the period of space exploration.
2. "Mosquito diaries"
The fight against malaria mosquito anopheles took scientists more than a dozen years, since this insect is a carrier of malaria - a disease, carrying an annual 438 thousand lives..
3. Secrets of the X-4D sinhotrona
This is a complex machine allows scientists to look into the essence of the material, whether the magma - to learn about the large-scale volcanic eruptions or ice crystals - to understand why one another ice cream tastier.
4. Make the spider work
Spider silk, which is woven from the web - is the key to the next generation compatible with living tissues (human body) ekoustoychivyh materials.
5. Bone Revolution
Researchers have developed a technology for growing artificial bone in vitro without the use of chemicals or medicines, and only with the aid of wave oscillations.
Regards, Shafagat
Scientists are responsible community members and their work change the world. That is the role of science. Remember TESLA! Happy holidays!

Merry Christmas to you!!!
My dear friends, let me remind you about nice thread of dear @Maria and @Deby!

https://www.researchgate.net/post/If_you_get_a_chance_to_change_one_thing_what_will_it_be
Wow, thank you, dear Ljubomir!
Good morning.
Yes, these subjects reverberate and there are so many ways of asking such questions.
In fact, I thought I was only reformulating my other previous question,
https://www.researchgate.net/post/Is_Science_a_Mission
In fact, the general definition of Science and the Scientist's role in society is one of my deepest concerns.
Dear Debi's question is also an amazing way of requesting our contribute in the same field...
The idea of near-effects of our works as scientists, both in the World as in closer human societies is a bit frightening.... But we have to face that fact as highly enriching, if we manage to build our contributes as positive influences in the present and future...
Its too interesting, how can differentiate between science and art. Science of Art and Art of science which to consider.
Dear Dr. Maria
I think that any action done by any person is a result of simple or complicated research work eg. if you want to buy a T shirt , you will consider color , size , season , price , your favorite color matching and miss match with your trouser or skirt and so on . Since there are choices a research is leading to actions or dissension.
I think through our Science Can Change the World movement we have highlighted and celebrated the unsung heroes of science – innovators working around the world, often alone, often lacking the resources, support and encouragement they require to put their solutions into practice, but carrying on. Changing the world in small but important ways.
Science has changed the way we eat today. In the 1940s, biologists began developing high-yield varieties of corn, wheat, and rice, which, when paired with new fertilizers and pesticides developed by chemists, dramatically increased the amount of food that could be harvested from a single field, ushering in the Green Revolution. These science-based technologies triggered striking changes in agriculture, massively increasing the amount of food available to feed the world and simultaneously transforming the economic structure of agricultural practices
I believe that science not only can but actually does change our world. it should do so in ways that maximize social justice and respect for the planet.
Dear Maria,
This can be achieved if the honest intentions serve the community. Particularly those provided by researchers from the achievements in health and environmental aspects and others.
I wish you and all RG members wish all a happy new year and that peace is achieved all over the world.
The following card from NRDC
Thank you, dear Fikrat!
I hear the majesticly beautiful polar bear may be at risk from Climate changes, but as Barbara put so well, it depends on us all to inform on changing behaviours to try and revert the process of the so-called "global warming"...
Best wishes to you and all!
Supposed to change the world for the better, but that is apparent descent into perdition.
Many Thanks, dear Maria!
We are a struggle with the impacts of climate change on nature in general. My wish is in the new year we prevent the disappearance of some organism from our planet.
Happy new year to you and your family
Fikrat
Dear
Science should change positively the world if it is used with effiency in respect of life and ethic.
Marius
Maria,
I think as scientists it is our duty to make this change. We have the ability and all it takes is a will to do it. I have found that the old process is broken. It finds itself stuck in the past holding to old and out dated concepts would have lead us to the edge of disaster. We must change this process or risk irrelevance.
Happy holidays.
Hope needs action or it is lost. I am working on many things in this next year. My hope is to make the changes that make it work.
Fikrat,
You are correct the environment waits for no one. We must change at an ever increasing rate to counter what has already been damaged.
Dear Maria,
As naive as I am, I am aware that our world, the countries, the farms, the companies, the factories even the universities, the whole society should be directed by scientists and artists together. By real, honest, moral scientists who can understand art and genuine artists understanding science. Thinking and tolerating and not insular, not egoistic people. People creating and working not for their own interests but for the common interest, common good and general beauty.
This is utopia. It is so good to dream: we are human – in best sense of the word - humans and not mercenaries of the capital and servants of deformed politicians.
All the world should be directed by the principles of science and sentiments of art. We are not programmed machines but humanoid developed by reasons and feelings, both in harmony.
Dear András!
These are the prettiest words I read from you, so far.
Thank you. I share your thoughts. I share your Hope.
Dear George,
I also share your hope to bring positive changes through my scientific work, and above all, through scientific education, that takes most of my time.
This is my only "ambition".
I have hope for the future.
Dear Maria,
I do not want to educate researchers, engineers, agriculturists only thinking people who are able to recognize what is right and to decide independently. I want to educate young people who can consider that happiness can be achieved just together. These are grandiose aims, I admit.
I do think that Science can change human beings for worse or for better. In the case of medicine, It can be for better (of course, ethically speaking). In the case of weapon of mass destruction, it is for worse.
The research in the fields of humanities and social sciences can positively influences the world and improve our understanding of the other. Through a moral education, we can revert the present negative human attitudes toward other people, nation, race. Through a war, we can revert the present urban developments , for exemple.
Have an excellent Chistmas time and a very happy New Year. María, you are a really kind person. Best wishes.
Science undoubtedly rules the world now.
Example of Communication Technology
- negative geopolitics impact has been considerably reduced, barrier to movement has been reduced and economic development on the rise.
I think Science has already changed the world.
Science is the most significant method to alter both our local communities and the world at large. People of all genders, races, and ages should engage in science. We may all be different people, but one of the major things that link us together is our curiosity.
The idea and paradigme of science and the sciences are as historical bound as we and our cultures are. There is no real objectivity and no real subjectivity. It is the yin and the yang of the world, bringing rational and irrational, logical world and emotional-spiritual world together, creating our cosmos and its conception...
Isn´t it like this?
We need to think about the challenges we have. We require fine, clean sources of power. We need to be able to supply a very large global population with food. There are alo of diseases that we might be able to develop treatment for.
Dear Reasearch
Science is just as essential today. We face a host of societal and environmental issues, with challenges like climate change, energy efficiency, and food and resource security. We need to transition from an unsustainable fossil fuel-based linear present to the bio-based, circular economy of the future based both on more sustainable inputs (chemicals, materials, fuels) and more recycling and reuse. Humanity must feed an increasingly large and affluent world population healthily, while reducing its carbon footprint.
Despite its unquestionable importance, we must recognize that science today does not have the status and importance it once had. Studies show that scientists are not listened to enough, scientific facts are often overlooked, or questioned, in favour of emotion and gut feeling, and recent polls suggest an increasing disconnect between science and public opinion on key issues – not only climate change, but also genetic modification and even evolution itself.
This shift in perceptions towards science has been driven by a number of factors. Clear, direct, open-minded public debate around scientific topics and scientific advancement is often lacking. The increasing specialization of scientific disciplines and fast-moving technological advances mean many people feel lost and insecure. The world is seen as too complex – so people reject progress and retreat back to what they know.
This situation has worsened further since society became more often ruled by opinion instead of facts; by the ever-increasing politicization of science, with NGOs and politicians using science for political gain; and the often unbalanced reporting of science by the media, where real expertise is often drowned out.
On climate change in particular, the continuing public scepticism towards the scientific consensus around a significant human role in climate change is disconcerting, and both politicians and the media are reluctant to discourage anti-science sentiments among the general population.
If we are to fully embrace the opportunity of science then we need to put it back in its rightful place in society. It has to be recognized as the foundation upon which we build economic, technological and societal progress. To do so, we must recognize the issues that have undermined its standing and offer solutions that begin to turn the tide.
We must be better at communicating and explaining science. Scientists must engage with the general public and fight to change an environment where good science is too often drowned out by sensationalism and commonly-held fears. If we want people that are non-experts to be inspired by science, we need to give it a “human face” and tell the story of science in simple and accessible ways that people can relate to, and be inspired by. We must focus on the success stories of enterprising individuals who use their intelligence and drive to make the world a better place. These pioneers must be the ambassadors around which we communicate a more positive scientific narrative.
We must also stand up for science in the face of myths, conspiracy theories and misunderstanding. Sensationalism in politics, the NGO world and the media has undermined the reputation and standing of science. The resulting misconceptions can cause major issues, which is why scientists must be braver and more active in countering falsehoods.
Science has helped us solve some of the most important societal challenges, and has created opportunities that were unimaginable even a few years ago. Yet science often gets the blame when things go wrong and not enough credit when things go right. There are, for example, a number of science-enabled innovations and developments which have, or will have, a transformative impact on the way we manufacture, cure diseases and shrink our carbon footprints. These include 3D-printing, personalized medicine, bio-based materials, connected cars and more advanced renewable energies. If others don’t recognize the contribution of science to these advances, then we will have to make them aware ourselves.
Although understanding and communicating the positive impact of science is vital, it is not enough. We also need to make changes to the ways in which we pursue science. We need to find new and better ways to conduct and translate science into innovation.
Thank you
Should the word "Science" in the question be replaced by:
"Research" or
"Education" or
"Human Culture" or............
Or perhaps this question is relevant at all of these levels.
The linked podcast makes interesting listening.

Dear Michael,
I think science can be replaced by reason or logical thinking but culture and educations as antecedent matter.
As the human race continues into the 21st century, our technological progress has mastered much of the world around us. But serious societal challenges remain to be tackled if we want to secure a sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come...

That is a beautiful text. It works well as a whole.
Yes, the World needs to embrace Science.
Science coupled with humanism can certainly change the world. Science is super conscious intellectual effort of novel continuous expansion of knowledge for the benefit of humanity.
Thank you, dear Jaharkanti !!!
How very poetically acurate!
This (your)
Highly precious
Answer you offer, is a
Novel beautiful contribute to
Sciences definition, and I'm thrilled to read it in my question!
If the Science does not change the world for better, science would be a monster at hands of unconscient or ignorant persons.
Modern science and technology has changed the world beyond recognition for the better.
Science is meant to re-engineer the raw materials for human welfare. The raw materials are already existing in nature. Development can be reversible only if man kind fancies. Destruction and construction are just flaws of human minds. We need to remember one thing."We are the decorators of our place, not more than that". Humans are slaves of necessities and boredom. To acquire basic needs and to avoid boredom or monopoly we often tend to rely on art of science to make ourselves better.
Science has changed the world and continues to be a driving force for humanity’s progress. No one could question the fact that science and technology have improved quality of life for many of us, but in some cases innovation has led to controversial or unintended consequences...
Society today is facing some colossal issues -such as food security, antibiotic resistance and energy supply - so it is important that science continues to progress. These issues need to be tackled, but in the right way; conducting research that not only answers questions and solves problems, but is also in line with the ethical values and needs of society.
Achieving this requires reflection on complex ethical issues and their potential risks, however unlikely they may be. It is also important to involve wider society in these discussions through open and transparent processes that can be flexibly adapted to rising demands and ensure a diversity of voices is considered.
This is where Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) comes into play...
When Science evolves in a positive way, then also scientists will follow. When we get involved in Science, the positive effect should affect both sides. The resultant effect for a better World, should follow...
(unfortunately, the same would apply to negative results of science, and scientists, in a quick domino effect which in turn, would affect societies. It is our choice to decide which part to play in Science. I hope for the Best !)
Science has changed the world and continues to change it. It is sufficient to mention electricity, vehicles, including super-fast trains and planes, tunnels, bridges, tall buildings, radio, television, telephone, computer and internet ... Do not forget the vaccines, antiseptic, antibiotics, analgesics, targeted therapy of cancer diseases ... Yes, science changes the world and makes it a better place to live. Science improves our quality pf life. And this is one of the most important goals of science and one of its greatest achievements. The problem is that politicians and the people do not listen enough carefully the warnings of scientists, do not follow their advices. The paradox is that, despite progress in science there are people who still live in the past. And the worst part is that research findings can be used by evil people with evil intentions. But I do believe that Science and Education will not only change but also save the world!
yes, the science change and will change the world.
all the best for 2017
Science do change the world, BUT the super power is in the hand of politicians.
Again , the science and modern technology will change the world
Thank you, dear Anne.
We have been missg your contributes. Welcome back!
Science means systematic knowledge of the society. If the societies are well systematized in tunes of justice and fraternity, certainly benefits of S&T can be extended to other organisms on this Earth also.
But when greed is the principle to survive, all will be perished one day.
Ethics is essential with scientific applications.
That is my opinion.
Yes it can , I believe as this year goes by so many innovations and development will be out for everyone to see

Dear @Goli, your answer is almost identical to the answer of dear @Prabhat at the previous page! Which one is the original one? This contribution belongs to one author.
Yes, and dear Prahat concludes correctly, that Ethics can make THE difference.
In fact, when it comes to human conduct rules, both ethics and religious morals tend to be quite similar too, even when we consider different religious beliefs.
Dear Maria, I believe and trust that science can and should contribute to human improvement and to the progress of society. I agree that new ways of dealing with current, predictable and future problems are required. Science and academics have the ethical and moral commitment to bring their results and knowledge to the common man and contribute to their growth. Best regards
Science was always a powerful tool for changing our world including us. However, the rates and directions of change are so variable because it depends on many interacted factors. Future science carries huge possibilities for modify and improve research attitudes, a fact that new generations of researchers must be consciously deal with it.

Thank you, dear Salah.
Science has surely changed us. Now is our turn to change others in a positive pleasurable way... through science.
