• Groundwater geochemical data collected from two major U.S. aquifers, High Plains (HP) and Central Valley (CV), revealed naturally occurring groundwater uranium (U) exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant level (MCL = 30 μg/L) across 22375 km2where 1.9 million people live. Analysis of geochemical parameters revealed a moderately strong correlation between U and nitrate, a common groundwater contaminant, as well as alkalinity and calcium [Spearman’s rho (ρ) ≥ 0.30; p < 0.001]. Nitrate is recognized to alter U solubility by oxidative dissolution of reduced U(IV) minerals. Approximately 78% of areas where U concentrations were interpolated above the MCL were correlated to the presence of nitrate (Pearson’s r ≥ 0.5; p < 0.05). Shallow groundwater was determined to be the most susceptible to co-contamination (HP, ρ = 0.46; CV, ρ = 0.52). Together, these results indicate that nitrate, a primary contaminant, should be considered as a factor leading to secondary groundwater U contamination in addition to the recognized role of alkalinity and calcium.

I advise you to kindly read this cited article carefully. These are in fact contaminated aquifer and are not natural ground water /aquifer. The title of the manuscript is highly misleading. Such high values of nitrate and uranium is simply due to mixing of mine water with ground water. The pH of one well was reported to be around ~3. Kindly read carefully the supporting supplementary files before commenting.:

Groundwater U and nitrate concentrations exceeded the MCL in 10 and 21% of tested wells, respectively, in the HP and CV aquifer metadata (Table S4). In the HP aquifer, U concentrations of ≤2674 μg/L (89 times the MCL) and nitrate concentrations of ≤1894 mg/L (189 times the MCL) were identified (Figure S4 and Table S5). Similarly, high groundwater U concentrations were identified in the CV aquifer with U concentrations of ≤5400 μg/L (180 times the MCL) and nitrate concentrations of ≤340 mg/L (34 times the MCL) (Figure S5 and Table S5).

However, I believe RG is a community where people help each other in the best possible way they can. So, while it is good to share the information after checking, it may not be possible for the person sharing the information with you in depth (unless he/she is interested in that paper). The recipient of the answer can decide if he wish to go through a certain paper/reference in detail or ignore.

Coming to your question, the second reference cited by Dr. Arvind "Natural uranium contamination in major US aquifers linked to nitrate" is a work by Dr. Karrie Weber (Karrie A Weber) from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She suggests that nitrate groundwater contamination could lead to uranium mobilization in groundwaters. Weber and Nolan in this paper examined uranium and nitrate concentration data for 276,511 samples of groundwater and drinking water collected by federal, state and local agencies from nearly 62,000 sites above the High Plains and Central Valley aquifers. The researchers noted that in approximately 78% of sites where groundwater uranium concentrations exceeded the MCL, the contamination was moderately to strongly correlated with high nitrate levels, suggesting a link between nitrate and uranium contamination.

I think the sample size in the study and the statistical correlation is good to point towards a correlation between mobilization of Uranium and presence of Nitrates.

This is misleading and can not be compared with Natural ground water aquifer. Yes, this is man-made high contamination of aquifers due to mine or milling activities.

You are advised to read carefully the supplementary information of cited article. In fact, these are highly contaminated aquifer and not natural -environmental ground water aquifers.
