Can neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) be visualized with Congo Red? What would be the difference between various staining methods used for this (ie. HE, silver stainings,...)? What's the best one?
Since neurfibrillary tangles are an insoluble amyloid particles due to improper protein cleavaging, yes. Congo res should hypothecially create a birefringement. But some articles as below point to other wise.

Campbell and gallyas has better sensitivity and specificity.
In principle, yes, including birefringence. But this may be somewhat capricious, and there are much better visualisation means: thioflavin for fluorescence, Bielschowsky for silver (mostly used for diagnostics/Braak & Break staging), and immuno e.g. with AT8 for molecular assays.
Gongo red is specific for amyloid and easier to do than a silver technique. H&E is all general "stain all(most)" tissue types of technique to give an overview of what is happening. An LFB/CV luxol fast blue counteren with C violet is another good easy CNS stain.
