There nanofluids oil-and water-based. Surfactant concentration significantly alters the surface tension of water-based nanofluids. Main nanofluids property of their resistance against segregation. With increasing concentration of surfactant decreases the surface tension and increases the stability of nanofluids. Therefore, the surface tension can characterize the quality of the water-based nanofluids.

Yes, Surface tension test can be carried out on nanofluids. Generally dispersion of nanoparticles into a base fluid increases its surface tension by virtue of the increased surface energy of the resultant dispersion. This increase gradually becomes more with increasing nanoparticle concentration. However when is a surfactant is used for spacing, the surfactant layer between the nanoparticle and the fluid layer tend to increase the electrostatic force between the particles which in turn decreases the surface energy of the dispersion. This decrease in the surface energy eventually causes a reduction in the surface tension as well. If you are carrying out an experiment, you can test the surface tension of the nanofluids for different concentration of nanoparticles, different particle size - with and without the usage of surfactants and you can compare the extent of variation.
