The colorimetric method is robust and reliable when you have low concentration of chlorine. According to the methodology 5220 D. Closed Reflux, Colorimetric Method of APHA-AWWA is possible to determine COD from 0 up to 200 mg / L using a wavelength of 420 nm. I'm forwarding an article with the preparation procedure COD validated for dairy effluent. I hope it helps you. Best Regards
Just like Rodrigo Salazar said, it is a trustworthy method and accurate. You need to dilute your sample a bit since your sample is out of optimal reading range.
Lets say if you dont want to dilute your sample, buy test kits with higher concentration range. 1000, 5000, even 30000 mg/L COD. You can also try the COD reflux titration method which is quite good too. all you need to do is to prepare the reagents for titration using the FAS (ferric ammonium sulphate). Still you need to dilute your sample within measuring range
