I have an electrochemical experiment that needs to be done in an NMR tube. For this, ordinary reference electrodes will fail. So, I need to use a reference electrode as thin as a wire, probably Ag wire coated with AgCl (Ag/AgCl). Is it possible to use a wire of Ag coated with AgCl as a reference electrode directly inserted into the electrolyte solution?
Yes it is possible provided that the AgCl is insoluble in your sample solution. Such electrodes were used in early electrophoretic NMR measurements, e.g. Holz et al., J. Mag. Res. A 105, 90 (1993). Robinson and Stokes list some methods for making such electrodes (Electrolyte Solutions, Butterworths, 1965, p.199). Others can be found in the 1950's and 1960's literature on conductivity and transport number measurements in aqueous chloride solutions (e.g. Fuoss, Stokes, Spiro, Barthel).
You can made a Ag pseudo electrode (Ag wire), calibrate using Fc couple.
