I'm trying to identify some spots on my TLCs. I'd like to stain first with alpha-napthol and H2SO4, and then stain with Dittmer reagent or Dragendorff reagent. Can I do that?
Hi. In theory, because I do not work with TLC plates, you can not stain it twice since second stain could not work. Each stain causes an irreversible chemical reaction. But if you want to do it, try to not contaminate the second stain if that happens you will have to be thrown out. But again, that's what I heard people say.
I think you cannot used multiple reagents for same TLC plate, if you want to detect the spots, it will be nicer you use first using UV 254 and 366, than you can spray with certain reagent (e.g. Dragendorff. But ff you want to do it with other reagents (e.g. H2SO4 or others), you should do again the separation with new TLC plate.
