Giancarlo: Thank you for this helpful alternative approach. The work has already been done and submitted (we are just following a reviewers suggestion to add a random factor for tank). Unfortunately we did not follow the identity of each subject (thus not possible to use (1|tank/subject)), but I will try this for some upcoming experiments on behavioral syndromes..

Olga (and others): I managed to get the model to run (below). How would you interpret the fixed and random effects? Would you agree with my interpretation “text below”? And how would you recommend presenting this analysis in a paper?

“Treat1 (i.e., the reference level) responded in a markedly different way to treat2PB and treat3CA. The significant interaction between treat1 and treat2PB suggests that the response of these species will vary depending on time (i.e., differing rates of abandonment), while the lack of an interaction between treat1 and treat3CA and the significant main effect for treat3CA suggests that the overall responses of these two spp. differ irrespective of time.”

I have tried hard to install the package of ASREML-R.

Although "I am a Ph.D. student at Humbold university"

I couldn´t find Site reference: ?????????????? as I found that for the University of Zurich
