I am searching for method of soil sample preparation for PAHs determination with GCMS. My GCMS equipment is Agilent 7890/5977A, GC column HP-5MS UI. Some of advisors suggest me use a method of Agilent: Analysis of PAHs in Soil with Agilent BondElut HPLC-FLD (attachment). At the end of the method he proposed me to evaporate ACN solvent using sample concentrator and dilute sample using solvent dedicated to GC-MS.

Selection of the sample preparation technique depends on your purpose of the analysis and also on the available equipment. Personally, I recommend PLE (EPA 3545), which usually provides excellent results. But, provided you can validate the method, every other technique may work as well; Soxhlet, microwave or ultrasonic assisted solvent extraction, MSPD and so on.

Thank you for your answer. EPA 3545 look good but we have not any equipment for pressurized liquid extraction. But we have microwave oven - MARS5. I 'll try to check procedures. Thanks a lot.

both ASE (pressurized liquid extraction) and classical Soxhlet give the highest recoveries of target analytes, using hexane/acetone as an extraction solvent ( some of my colleagues prefer dichloromethane). With ultrasonic extraction ( and above mentioned solvents), the recoveries are significantly lower.
With your single quad, you will get better LOD/LOQ than with HPLC/FLD and the selectivity will be better, too. On the other hand, with 5-ms column, separation of relevant isomers on mass 252 (benzo b-, benzo k-, and benzo j- fluoranthenes ) is insufficient.

I am using Ethyl acetate with ultrasonic extraction for the first step and mix of Acetone- Pentane(50-50) for second step of extraction.
