Since we use the Dako stainer for immunohistochemistry, we usually don't make isotype controls. We are using about 300 antibodies routinely and are staining about 200 specimens per day. This would be too expensive.
If you stain by hand or for Facs analysis it is necessary to use isotype controls to measure the amount of background staining caused by the non-specific staining of your antibody to Fc receptors. A good address for isotype controls is Serotec.
Another idea: Biolegend sells a Fc receptor blocking solution. Cat number 422302. You can save expenses with extra antibodies.
