The other method I think about is lyophilization or freeze drying but it is demanding some equipments and the use of liquid nitrogen.
HMDS method just needs HMDS. HMDS is an inexpensive chemical easy to use under hood. At the end, if you are not in a hurry, you just let it evaporate under the hood over night, otherwise oven.
What are your specimens? For biological tissue I would recommend obtaining (as already did Nicolas Barois ) some HMDS, inexpensive and sold by nearly all EM suppliers.
