I would like to understand the theory behind near and far field scattering around metal nanoparticles and theoretical and experimental techniques to study those two plasmonic effects

you can read wikipedia to know how the near-field and far-field region are defined. The fundamental difference is the scattered field from the nano-particle (small compared to wavelength) is mainly scattered along the polarization direction at near-field but along the propagation direction at far-field.
