It depends on the type of DNA you isolated. If it's a plasmidic DNA you should see the 3 DNA isoforms ( resulting in 3-4 bands of different intensity). If its a PCR or is a plasmid digestion you should see only the PCR band or the bands corresponding to the fragment expected from de digestion.
If you see a diffused smir probably there is a degradation of your DNA ( check for contaminants) or simply repeat the gel.

A smear indicates that you have different sized DNA fragments running down your gel (bigger fragments closer to the origin). If you have only amplified one gene you should only see one band per lane (or per sample).
