I need to conjugate astaxanthin with gold nanorod for anticancer studies. I need to get clear about which materials (Polymer or amino acid) can be used as linker (Ex: collagen, chitosan, BSA, PLA and other polymers) to link the astaxanthin with gold nanorod. I have read some research articles where they formed astaxanthin micro capsules using chitosan. Is it possible to conjugate this microcapsule with gold nanorod.
You can use heterobifunctional PEG (very often used to stabilize GNRs for biological studies). The hetero bifunctional PEG may have -SH to get it attached to the gold. The other functionality could be some reactive group to which Astaxanthin can attach. To determine this functionality, you have to know the reactive group of Astaxanthin and with which it would react. Say for e.g., if your drug has NH2 group, you can use SH-PEG-COOH. The NH2 of the drug can react with the COOH with the help of EDC.

Astaxanthin is having –OH and C=O as functional group. Which material I can use here, to conjugate and other than NMR how I can confirm the conjugation?
I think SH-PEG-NH2 would be suitable for your conjugation provided you use carbodiimide cross linking chemistry (double check all the chemical structures and confirm). Apart from NMR, UV spectral analysis can give the conjugation result.
