I want to know how the modes are excited when we use mode analysis study in Comsol?
when we use boundary mode analysis in Comsol, the modes excited using ports we create. what about the excitation of the mode when we use mode analysis study using wave optics module? are the modes excited using boundary conditions we apply or they excited from another origin?

Mode analysis has no excitation. It shows you the possible modes you can have. It is up to you to figure which modes you excite in a subsequent analysis. If you have something like ports, you decide which modes you apply at the boundary, and your mode analysis will have told you about their propagation

The boundary mode analysis gives you propagation in the out-of-plane as well as mode information in the plane (I am speaking from acoustics), and is combined with a subsequent frequency analysis. The mode analysis gives information about the modes, but YOU are the one exciting these modes with your port.

What do you mean by your port?
As I mentioned before, my stucture was designed in 2D and I can not apply port to my structure. I get the mode I want but I just want to know how these modes excited. For example we know that in boundary mode analysis the mode can be excited via ports. what about modes in mode analysis study? what is the origin of these modes?
