I'm hoping to simulate nonlinear metamaterials in comsol 5.1 and I would like to be able to see the frequency of the em waves leaving my metamaterial.
I have looked online for tutorials but the only examples on the comsol website I could find were for 5.2 upwards.
Any help would be appreciated.

In eigenfrequency solver you just find the frequencies that the structure can support. Also eigenmode solver in a similar manner finds the modes the structure can support. these frequencies or modes are found by turning off the source in the wave equation. but in the frequency domain solver you impress the source and look for the response.

Maybe you have to be careful using nonlinearity and frequency domain both together.
Anyhow, eigenfrequencies are frequencies at which a structure resonates with any driving source. This fact implies a non physical amplitude in your results; you should normalize them according to your goal.
Frequency domain can be used to evaluate the frequency response to a driving source. In this case, amplitude in your results are physical. In particular, you will have higher values in correspondance of eigenfrequencies.

Could you suggest how I could measure second harmonic generation? I know how to set up the frequency of the incident wave, but how do you measure the wave frequency out of the structure for a given input frequency?
