Many studies, particularly in my field of teaching EFL, use students as participants. My theory is that sometimes you can have a research goal that is not the same as the instructional goal. The instructional goal should be based on desired outcomes, but the research goal may concern one particular aspect of the instructional design.

Absolutely. My most recent instructional design was getting students to translate something they are interested in e.g photosynthesis and explaining it in their second language but my research was would I get more engaged kids. It was a win, win.

I always enjoy your scholarly questions. I certainly agree with your reasoning concerning the issue. Very often, as in critical discourse analysis research, you simply pursue a research goal whose outcome can cater to a particular aspect of instructional design (e.g., academic writing or critical review of a given essay). It seems that research and instructional goals have a symbiotic relationship. Although they are different, they complement each other.

The hiatus afflicting research and pedagogical endeavors can be mitigated through blending teaching and research praxis and practices,
discontinuity and separation of these colossally significant educational phenomena can further widen the breakage between theory and practice,
hence ,it is high time we jettisoned stringent intimidating research designs and embark on a presentation of teaching experiences as research findings and endorse the viability systematic consistency validity and reliability of action researches and qualitative studies .
Reza -- Thank you for your comments. I have a reply to reviewers in which I will need to explain this problem. The instructional outcome goal was better use of English idioms, however he research questions were about the specific instructional methodology used.
Rahimi. In a couple of my past publications, I have argued that many research studies in the field of TESOL are poor studies because they are short term tests and the literature lacks studies of long-term implementation of various technologies and instructional methodologies. MUCH CALL research is never integrated into the curriculum!
Michael, this could be owing to an inappropriate attitude towards interdisciplinary research studies, paucity of interaction among disciplines, and even at times a denigrating spin on certain fields .
Into the bargain, decision making procedures are not necessarily carried out by most efficient scholars , bitterly ironically, sensitive decisions at higher echelons of curriculum development policy making are made by the least qualified authorities who do not have the faintest idea about the academic scientific aspects of the enterprise .
