I am working on a plant from the family polygonecae, where i found that the callus derived plantlets are having around 20% of somaclonal variability but the plant is also having significantly higher levels of tanins, total phenol, alakaloid etc., What can be the possible reason for this? Can somaclonal variability give rise to some sort of stress which is causing the secretion of these secondary metabollites?
