Hi, has anybody had the experience of publishing with Cambridge Scholars Publishers? They are not related to Cambridge University Press nor the University of Cambridge and publish academic books in a variety of fields including the life sciences. They have a big list of titles sold as hard back books that look very beautiful and professional, but the prices are quite high. I received an e-mail inviting me to submit an idea for a book and I am very tempted but with all the publishing spam and phishing going on, I would really appreciate any experience or advice anyone might have.

This is most likely a scam. You submit a proposal and then they tell you how much it will cost to publish. It's a form of vanity publisshing. I have been asked to write a review of a book published by CSP, but I stopped half-way into my review owing to the standard of research they allow themselves to publish, which takes me to Terry's comment on getting published for money. So, if I were you, I would think twice before submitting a manuscript. BTW, many get solicited, like you, to publish with them. And I am no exception, but I was not tempted to do so.

the e-mail I received stated there are no publishing fees and that royalties are payable from the first book sold. I then had a look at their website and the books they show there are quite nicely done but the prices as really high, so I do wonder whether they would actually sell any... this is why I was intrigued and tempted because I have genuine ideas for scientific books.
Having read your comments however, I think I will pass on this one...
Alena, I contributed a chapter to an edited book published by Cambridge Scholars. I never received a copy of the final book, and all contributors were encouraged to "market" the book themselves. I was not impressed, and would not recommend this publisher.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It does sound rather negative... writing a book or part of it is really hard work and one would have expected a bit more consideration from a publisher who is feeding from the expertise authros have to offer. It is very disappointing and rather irresponsible of them. I will definitely follow your advice and give this a miss.

CSP is a good publication house. The authors of the chapters in their books don't receive any copies. However, the editors do receive four complimentary copies. They don't charge the authors/editors any publication fees. And their language screening process is quite stringent. Having worked with them for two projects, I find them quite good in quality and professionalism.

Jaydip Sen, as you have had such ample experience with them, it would be great if you could share some more details. It would be enlightening to know what the process was like in terms of editorial support, graphics and publicity. It would also be helpful to know more about their copyright and royalties approach.
