I am very new to MOF-field. I really need your help, can anybody please suggest me which is a simple and best technique to do VOCs adsorption studies for MOFs? In our lab we have GC-MS and my big doubt is to study the adsorption capacity of our MOFs, should I go through all the experiments listed below.
1) To do volumetric studies which instrument is required?
2) To do gravimetric studies which instrument is required?
3) To do break-through experiments which instrument is required?

I only have experience in breakthrough experiments. In my case, we built a setup to generate the desired concentration of the investigated analyte using two methods: dilution from a gas cylinder containing the analyte or evaporation from the liquid. The gas stream pass through a tube containing the adsorbent and the concentration was measured with a GC-PID. If you have a GC, you should check whether you can inject your samples using a sampling loop or another in-line option. For instance, GCs coupled to a thermodesorber have an injection option for pumping a sample directly from a line, so you just have to connect this line to the outlet of the tube containing your adsorbent and set an appropriate sampling time and analysis method. I have experience in doing gravimetric research. In particular, I worked on the development of glass-fiber catalysts (GFC) for the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds. When analyzing the synthesis efficiency, we used a synchronous thermal analysis device that includes gravimetry methods. Well-proven device companies NETZSCH: STA 449 F3 Jupiter. It includes thermogravimetric analysis, which determines all the effects of changes in the mass of the sample with an accuracy of 0.3 degrees Kelvin.
In the process of heat treatment, the initial sample masses decreased or increased. After the sample was studied by methods of physical and chemical analysis, and for each specific sample, possible causes of mass changes were determined: changes in the stoichiometry of phases due to thermal dissociation, loss of light-volatile impurities sorbed during synthesis, desorption of substances sorbed from the atmosphere. The area of thermal effects is determined by the program "Proteus". Which comes with the device in the kit.
