What could possibly be driving the actions of people who defy urgent calls for social distancing? What most common thinking errors could possibly be the reason behind that? Thank you.
When we overgeneralize, we assume that a past experience applies to every situation. Based on this logic, the COVID-19 crisis can’t be any worse than previous outbreaks like SARS and H1N1.
Many beliefs about the coronavirus downplay the seriousness of the crisis, such as:
“It’s basically like the flu.” This one gets repeated a lot, though it’s clearly false—for example, the mortality rate for coronavirus appears to be much higher.
"It only affects old people.” This one is doubly perplexing. First, it’s not true; the young are also at risk. But even if it were true, why should we take comfort in that? Aren’t the most vulnerable among us worth protecting, even at some inconvenience to ourselves?
“80% of people have mild symptoms.” It’s true that not everyone who contracts the coronavirus will end up on a ventilator. However, even a case that’s classified as “mild” can still be extremely unpleasant. You might think of a mild case of COVID-19 as being like an “easy marathon”—it’s still not a nice experience.
False emotional reasoning could be a nother reason! Feelings are not always reliable. A person might make the reverse inference for COVID-19, believing that “it can’t be a big deal because I’m not worried about it.” But as the saying goes, “Reality doesn’t care about your feelings,” and being unafraid doesn’t change the facts about this virus.
Some people seem to believe they can see into the future (perhaps based on overgeneralizing from the past) and are sure this will end up being much ado about nothing. I’ve heard people cite their experience in previous outbreaks, confident that they know what’s going to happen this time around. That could be another reason!
Rules, regulations, order, punishment or reward. Combination of these terms is highly essential at present. If you be bad, why can not I be that by punishing you? We have no enough to aware people. There is no true medicine except punishment (financially or even physically, if needed).
It is a culture inherited from grandparents, so it needs to do extensive marketing campaigns to change the behavior of individuals or this habit in light of the Corona virus and its instructions.
I agree with all of you. Reasons vary due to high personal variations. Some bad habits and maladaptive behaviors need to be modified and changed for the wellness of humanity on the individual and societal levels.
Most of the problem that has been experiencing in this pandemic despite many calls from the government sector is their stupidity and arrogance. Because of their bad philosophy n life attributes to fatal and most of the hardheaded person contradicting simple rule of law with their activism behavior.
Because of the COVID19 pandemic, social distancing is more prevalent to stay safe. However, most of the people are still arrogant and not aware of this simple rule being implemented by the authorities and that's the reason why it multiplies.
As per ASHRAE, you need to have at least 2-meters apart in human to human contact because the droplets or from the generated small particles like droplets caused by a person who either used to cough or talking on the room space/s that usually evaporates within the comfort zone is about 1-meter. But with the latest research conducted by the CDC, the virus travels about 13 feet (4-meters) distance and stays 3-hours within the space. Therefore, you need at least 2-meters away and if ever, much better you are about 4-meters to secure that you are safe with the said virus. Willful ignorance, a 'seeing is believing' rationale, and the fact that we as humans are social creatures i.e social interaction is ingrained into our DNAs
