BACTEC is a radiometric system for detection of Mycobacterial growth in liquid medium. Previously, we isolate the strain, them it is inoculated to the radiometric liquid media. Contamination is always a risk... if you see turbidity in the medium probably your culture is contaminated…

It signify all, it could be due to Mycobacerium tuberculosis or from nontuberculous mycobacteria or other contaminants isolates.

Radiometric Bactec is discontinuated, and no radioactive 14C is used. Now there is the Bactec fluorimetric method (MGIT)that is widely used.

Bactec positive= that mean that there is a growth Inside the vial = that mean that any microbe Inside is consuming Oxygen and liberating CO2.

It can be M. tuberculosis complex, non tuberculous mycobacteria, or other contaminant bacteria (if your decontamination method is not well done).
