My understanding on origin of consciousness as follows. The transference of reaction on a control is one direction. Bidirectional reaction is not available in a control system. So, the element that controls must be different from the element that is controlled. A control system must be configured by two different substances. Although the life includes an aspect of repeating, an actual life is changed spirally. So, the deductive reasoning cannot reach to origin of evolution. The descriptive study on evolution of molecular intelligent system will reveal the origin of life. The mechanism of production performs repair, and it performs self-organization and metabolism also. Beginning of creature is molecular organization for survival. Evolution of the molecular intelligent system has been achieved through experiences. Many chain reactions contributed to survive.

It seems to indicate a possible new type of control system. Is there a laboratory  repeatable  "evolution of molecular intelligent system" that could be experimented upon?

The consciousness of  a one-celled zygote is probably more or less be equivalent to the level of consciousness of  eukaryotic cells.  Our body is made of 10 000 billion of such a cells.  So at conception we were as conscious as these cells.   It was not nothing but it was not much.  As soon at it divided and became two cells then we separate from the cell level but not by much.

strictly speaking, there is NO way to measure consciousness. This is a philosophical- psychological question I had the opportunity to discuss in depth in the seminar on comparative psychology by  Prof. Stoerig, University Düsseldorf.

What you can measure: (motoric) reaction to sensoric stimulation, (motoric) reaction to (presumably) painful stimuli, other pain reactions (for instance endocrine), REM sleep (the assumption here is, that the embryo is dreaming and/or has mental experiences to process and thus posesses consciousness).

As said by Beret 'philosophical- psychological question'. I say an inexplicable question may be related to parapsychology. Or we have to talk about 'Vedantam', like what is life etc.etc. all explained in 'Bhagavad Gita'. Seems you have an interesting project 'Understanding Life'. Great!

If come to your question we have to go for stages of human embryo development may be at "gestational age of eleven weeks i.e. nine weeks after fertilization" might be having consciousness so fetus feels pain too. Probably at this stage First Trimester: Baby at 12 Weeks develop nerves and muscles. It is mentioned Second Trimester: Baby at 20 weeks seems the baby is more active can feel movement/kicking/hear/swallow etc. etc.

As per my knowledge to feel consciousness nerves/brain should develop then only we can have feelings like pain etc. Check the link Medical definition of Fetus you get answer, they provided Slideshows very informative.

You have asked an interesting question which depends on how we define consciousness. If you see the developing embryo as an organism, a living being, then an increase in complexity, does not change its essence . it is still a living being. If one sees consciousness as a property of "The Living Being", then consciousness is always present in spite of the fact the living organism takes a form. If you are talking about when that living being enters into matter, in my thesis I explain that on day 17 the heart starts to beat in both animals and humans.  If you hold that pulsation  is probably the underlying core principle and property of universal existence, cosmic existence, and local existence, this suggests that, via the heart,  Higher Nature begins to incarnate into matter on day 17.  However if you consider the different forms the embryo undergoes, during the descent of the heart and the development of the vertebral column and CNS, you will observe its ontological development resembles the phylogenetic history of nature and the incarnating being goes from wormlike, to fishlike to reptile like , to bird and mammal like. It is only on day 49 that is begins to resemble a human being. Consciousness is ever present as the incarnating being is able to follow complex instructions of a metaphysical kind otherwise it is not able  to develop a body of every changing forms.

This is difficult to determine, especially when science is yet to agree completely regarding the attributes that constitute consciousness, if consciousness actually resides in our physical bodies or if we just tap into a general pool of consciousness as we move around.

@Jetty Ramadevi  Thank you for an interesting suggestion "to feel consciousness nerves/brain should develop "  . Louis Brassard  has the view that consciousness is already present at the level of a one-celled zygote , but at least we have narrowed own from gestational period of nine months.

@Tina Lindhard Thank you very much for sharing your work. The thesis  is most interesting and I will go into it slowly . It is very  appealing that you have studied science and metaphysics together . Meditation remains much of a mystery to me , although I have a view. that if  we are absorbed in some thought where we forget the self it is meditation.

That certainly depends how you define consciousness. It has been convingly shown that human embryos can perceive pain (which certainly needs some kind of consciousness) at week 20 of prenatal life.
