Technology has progressed in a manner which brings in may disciplines together. As an example Gene editing will require sensing / simulation/ electrical/chemical/ mechanical inputs . In what way can a novice engineer determine quantitatively the effects of electrical technology on these challenges such as" carbon foot print" etc. This is an exploratory Q, would welcome all views from any discipline

Why explain it? Why not set them the challenge to find out and report back?
I've run a few projects with engineering students where you set an assessment to select a design or particular technology to resolve a situation. It's great, you always get back these perfectly formulated decisions about why (for example) hybrid cars are the best solution to reducing carbon emissions.
You then set a second assessment about what the wider implication of that choice in a societal, cultural and environmental context. Hybrid cars are great here... you get students to ask questions like:
What's in the batteries? Where does that come from? Where is it shipped? How is it shipped? Where is the car made? Where is the battery installed? Where is the car sold?
No matter what technology or design choice the students made in the first assessment, you can create a chain of questions that challenge their choices in a wider question. If they answer the questions themselves, they will end up with a much better appreciation of the issues than if you just tell them.
