depends on the discipline. within the humanities book chapters are still considered as important research. depending on the editors, the publishers and all the bibliometric things, a chapter can be as important as a journal article.
Frankly speaking I do not have experience of writing book chapter except few books based on college curriculum in my country which are not scientific. But generally publish paper in the peer review journals.
Articles are quit different from book chapters. You will require both for a fulfilling academic career. Book chapter writing demands that you have gotten experience in the area you are writing about. Depending on the structure laid by the editor, it can involve a combination of reviews, research or accumulated knowledge.
Article writing is usually the starting point. It gets your idea launched to the scientific community easily. By this, your work get recognized and gather citations.
However, an edited book with well written chapters when recognized, finds its way into major libraries of the world where you may find an article. They become reference books and last for years with new editions on it.
So which is better? Article or book chapter?

Article Publishing is preferable because journals have commonly more circulation than books and are more known to the concerned people dealing with scientific literature. Articles in journals also carry the reward of impact factor points plus greater chances of citations.
Thank you so much Dr Chukwuebuka Egbuna Dr Samra Harkat Dr Suman Sarkar Dr Geddada Mohan Narasimha Rao Dr Jefferson Prado adding the beautiful answer and references.
Thank you for your question and for the answers. My inclination was always ben that journal articles were more important, however Chukwuebuka Egbuna response has given me a lot to think about. Based on his perspective, it seems as though books are also a worthy way of expanding one´s work and research, especially if it is included in a collection of works on an important or current topic.
Preferable? I prefer both. I like to publish journal articles on issues regarding biodiversity conservation using TEK while contributing chapters to books on interesting themes that bring progress to global development.
Dear Dr. Tina Lindhard, thank you so much for making known that you find some aspects of my comment useful. Dear Dr. Hom Nath Chalise I appreciate your follow up and systematic analysis of questions.
I like to publish both book chapter as well as articke, believes that both are equally important. Book may serve as a permanent published research of many information at one place, which again depends on theme, whereas, article focuses only to a targeted area of research which does explain everything in details in on one place. For more information, you need to consult many research paper.
I think both are traditional missions/activities that should be done by researcher. His experience has to be shared in several forms, such as; research articles, review articles, books, reports, translation, etc.
From the academic perspective, I agree with Dr. Rajakishore Nath that it differs from Institute to Institute, but most commonly for assessment of progress of an individual Institutes give more weightage to journal publications than Book Chapters.
In addition, journal articles gain more visibility compared to book chapters in regards to letting your research known to the global audience. However, publishing as a Book chapter allows for wider discussion of your topic while you have to be specific and confine to the scope of journal for a journal article.
I would go for journal articles, over books' chapter.
Journal article: requires an intensive search on a particular topic, with more rigorous scientific process. It intends to find new outcomes as well. While, book includes the contents what is already the...And as I see, many of the books are copy of one another.......
In math it certainly is a journal article, rather than a conference paper; I know it can be the opposite in other sciences. A main reason for the higher prestige in journals is that there you get the chance to provide full proofs, illustrations, and a very good background story, that is, the subject survey. In a conference paper you are seldom allowed space enough to cover all the items I just mentioned, and therefore a journal paper is more informative and valuable over time.
Articles published in high-impact-factor journals are rigorously reviewed by experts of the field and can be described as the only reliable sources of academic information which do not reflect the personal opinions of authors. The same is not true for book chapters, book reviews, conference papers and the nonsense published by some low quality journals begging money from some so-called authors.
there are so many publisher are available for publish your articles or books such as; Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, Wiley, ASME, IEEE, Springier, Thomson Reuters, etc.. firstly select the publisher according your work and after that selecting the journals...
