First of all you need highly,calibrated engine test setup/test rig to obtain different parameters like diesel flow,air flow,load,engine rpm,temperature at various points,pressure-crank angle..etc..Further obtaining such parameters you can theoretically depict different efficiencies ,power,A/F ratio,..etc.Also refer book on combustion engines by Ganeshan sir.possibly very helpful..

Hi Rishi. thank you, We have everything ready, just i need conditions how to obtain it.. e.g. keep throttle fully open and then change load or change both together etc?

In dependance of the number of your parameters and the values you are looking for you could obtain the number of tested operating points by Design of Experiments (DoE). Followed by multiple regriession, you could even obtain empirical equations describing the engine behaviour.

As you mentioned earlier your engine is coupled with speed governor. I think you should change the load step by step and obtain the parameters as discussed. Also i agree with @Marek Mazur you can use DOE for better presentation and modelling your experimental work.

A standard procedure to test for a small diesel engine is not uniquely defined. It depends on the information to be obtained.

In any case, my suggestion is to remove the speed governor and test the engine in a set of conditions BMEP - RPM in order to get information on the main operating parameters.

Thank you Claudio  . At the moment , we are planning to test biofuel performance, e.g. B10, B20 and B30 and compare performance with Diesel.

would it be ok , if i keep full throttle (@3600 rpm) and vary the load (5, 10, 15, 20 & 25 Nm, ) (max 26 Nm on rig after that speed drops significantly) and repeat the same procedure for diesel and blends?

I am just want to be sure that test are valid.

Before testing your engine with biofuel, first you have to test the some important properties like density, viscosity, calorific value, iodine value, cetane no, fatty acid composition etc. and check whether they satisfied ASTM Standards. You can test the engine at different loading condition at constant speed with biofuel blends with diesel at different proportions. Record various performance parameters like Fuel consumption, BSFC, BTE, EGT, BMEP, IMEP, BSEC etc. You can also have emission tests like CO,CO2, UHC, NOX etc.

In Maritime industry we are commonly using the  ISO 8178 Test Cycles for exhaust gas emmission determination. It contains various test cycles for different engines and application. Why not to use some standard test cycle?
