At MIT, I eventually became a senior research scientist. This was doing now bubble chamber experiments, and then it evolved into doing partial experiments with other kinds of detectors. Then finally I was put up for professor, and I was voted in by the department. I was called to a meeting with the chairman of the department, and a colleague warned me I should go in prepared for bad news.

I couldn’t figure out what that was, but what it was was that—a charming physicist from Vienna, who was the chairman of the department then and I’ll come up with his name in a minute. He wrote the quantitative mechanics book—[Victor] Weisskopf. He couldn’t be the first man to appoint a woman to the physics department.

I was sort of flabbergasted, and I said, “Well, I guess then I will have to look for another job.”

He said, “Oh, no, no, no, you mustn’t do that,” because affirmative action had come into place and all of a sudden he realized that the person who had pushed it, who was Jerry Wiesner, brought his affirmative action to MIT long before there was government affirmative action, thanks to Leah Wiesner who was a mathematician—well also thanks, I’m sure, to his own common sense.

So after a few days, I was told that I was offered a position as assistant provost or dean or something to a very nice guy who’s name I can’t remember at the moment and I won’t be able to come up with, it so you’ll have to forgive me, but a man that I had known from other interactions, committees, or whatever. I was to work as an aid to him, as a scientific aid to him.

So one day he slid across my desk a document that was the affirmative action statement for the mathematics department. This now was for the government affirmative action that this was prepared, and I took it and I read it and I said, “This reads like nonsense. I don’t believe it.” I took it to my friend Vera Pless, who was a mathematician, and I said, “What do you make of this?”

She said, “This statement is false. I know this women is looking for a job and it says here that she isn’t. This statement is false. It says that there are no women qualified in this particular area,” and so and so, so and so, and so and so. 

She tore the thing apart, and I made marginal notes on all of these comments. Then I did the thing I should be ashamed of: instead of bringing them to my good friend, whose assistant I was, I sent one copy to Wiesner and the other copy of what I had done to the head of the mathematics department. If you’ll excuse me, the shit hit the fan. I was made full professor retroactive to the beginning of the summer. I never would have made a very good administer.

Here's a rejected piece of my writing. I pinned some hope of it being accepted by a local newspaper's summer fiction addition. Now, it is up to me, to transmit it directly to thank those surgeons who took care of its ab-normal condition, at the time of my trouble but it isn't the end of the story yet, I am afraid.  I penned those lines at my family gathering in Duxbury, in uncle Eric and aunt Betsy's room, there's a book, in it was the poem by Theodore Roethke

Eye witness

Fortnights ago, my right eye turned evil.

It splits the world in half:

one side clear, the other misguided.

Naturally, i was puzzled but went on as if

my world is unchanged.

But then my educated mind caught up,

'one must check with professionals,

for such radical change on point of view'

Exactly 7 days before Good Friday,

my right eye was put on trial.

Three doctors examined it

with great interest and gladness.

Each one alerted the next

to engage in its urgent care.

Monday came and the vitrectomy was delivered

to posterio chamber where macular must suffer

a total change of its atomsphere

so that the heart of matter shall be rightfully reflected in due time.

After the execution with laser sharpness,

three nights and three days,

my head is ordered to be in a certain spot

for the promise of good vision to return to me.

On Good Friday, as if unplanned and perchance,

a dead poet Theodore Roethke to my trouble at hand.

I dived into what appears to be an ocean of Pearl S. Buck's astounding quarrels with the separate and none equal world, Chinese and American Society from her parents time and boxing uprising in China 1900 to 1973 the year she died in a not so good a year for her.  Only long after her death,  there might be hope that her life's work is now uniting people to reflect their own skepticism towards other culture and other people about each's birth right to freely love things alien and foreign to one self, as long as one's kindred spirit was left to one's own device during childhood.

Authoritarian vs. Totalitarian 

In New Jersey, individual's state tax liability can be increased unilaterally by more than 10% with one simple letterhead stating its authority, ( written off as third party recovery cost quoting some obscure administrative rule-book )  if one fails to pay in full within a timeframe due to whatever reason behind personal loss of income.  This is selectively distribute State power to instigate private entity activities that generate no real wealth but attrition for the lower stratum yet for the upper governing body, what does it gain, in the name of the State, presumably established for the people, by the people, of the people? I define this scheme/phenomena as an authoritarian enforcement/endorsement. It might be necessary if enforcement isn't coming anywhere, anytime soon from voluntary redeeming quality of its citizenship. 

Our medicare and healthcare cost seem to be easily falling into the same trap when provider/marketplace is authorized to compound their cost with the actual delivery of medical care by medical professionals. On the one hand, patients have more decent access to healthcare guaranteed by federal law yet the proliferation of billing and collection agents ( buying/selling medical billing as subcontractors from big hospitals) also earned its right to sue 'debtor/beneficial patient' in 'special' civil courts for as little as $500.  Another modern day authoritarian way of life perfected only too well in current State of Union.

A report by Dr. Barbujani and colleagues appears today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States.

The Evangelist, according to ancient sources, was a physician who was born in Antioch and died at 84 in about 150 A.D. in the Greek city of Thebes. The coffin with his remains was taken to Constantinople, the capitol of the Byzantine empire, in 338 A.D. and later moved to Padua, Italy.

The body, if indeed it is Luke's, has experienced a simpler voyage through history than the head, which was removed by the Emperor Charles IV in 1354 and taken from Padua to Prague, where it rests in the Cathedral of St. Vitus, in the Prague Castle.

''There were officially two heads of St. Luke, one at Prague and one in Rome,'' Dr. Barbujani said. At Bishop Mattiazzo's request, the Prague skull was brought to Padua and found to fit perfectly to the topmost neck bone. The tooth, found on the floor of the coffin, also fit into the right socket in the jawbone.

Though many relics turn out to be forgeries, executed in modern or medieval times as demand arose, the Padua body seems more likely than most to be what it is claimed to be, although exact proof is lacking.

''I think we should accept that there is no way to tell if it was the Evangelist Luke, but the genetic evidence does not contradict the idea,'' Dr. Barbujani said.

Last October, according to the Traces article, at least part of the body completed the circle to its original resting place. Bishop Mattiazzo sent a rib from the skeleton for Metropolitan Hieronymus to place in the empty Theban tomb.

In this course, we will be drawing on the many excellent collections in Philadelphia to explore both how “the bible” was constituted through a variety of material forms for liturgical use, devotional practices, scholarly exegesis, the education of children, and as a literary resource. One question will be to what extent “the bible” was a post-Reformation invention, given that it was not particularly useful for liturgical practices in the Middle Ages. We will focus on Genesis, the Psalms, and the Gospels from the Middle Ages onwards, focusing on English translations from Wycliffe to the Brick Testament (made out of Lego).  No language skills are required, but you may find some online resources for the Latin Bible useful (e.g. http://www.latinvulgate.com and http://medievalist.net/search.htm).

Special topics will include: the bible as scrolls and as codex; the invention of the pocket bible; the development of biblical reference systems; the dissemination of the scriptures through a range of “non-biblical” forms (books of hours; children’s primers; sermons; anthologies; commonplace books); printing and publishing the bible (including in North America); “illustrations” as counter-texts; commentary and exegesis.

We will pay particular attention to typological reading (for which a good starting point is George Herbert’s “The Bunch of Grapes” in a modern annotated edition). To what extent does typology challenge dominant modern notions of reading, usually based upon the reading of novels? To what extent was the book-form (first mentioned by Martial in the 1st century CE and thus virtually coterminous with Christianity) ideally suited for discontinuous reading, whether through the collation of the “same” passage in the four gospels or through the typological collation of Old Testament and New Testament passages? Finally, to what extent was the reading of the bible transformed by post-novel reading practices?

Peter Stallybrass is Annenberg Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has directed the History of Material Texts seminar since 1993. Peter has been awarded the Andrew Lang Gold Medal from the University of St. Andrews and four teaching awards from Penn. He was the Samuel Wannamaker Fellow at the Globe Theatre in London, the Moses Aaron Dropsie Fellow at the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, and he is a member of the American Philosophical Society. He has collaborated with Jim Green on curating exhibitions on “Material Texts” and on Benjamin Franklin at the Library Company and the Grolier Club, and on the book Benjamin Franklin, Writer and Printer (2006). With Heather Wolfe, he curated the exhibition on “Technologies of Writing in the Renaissance” at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Stallybrass’s work focuses on early modern printing and manuscripts and he is at present turning his Rosenbach Lectures in Bibliography on “Printing for Manuscript” into a book to be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
