I'm a researcher interested in wireless medium access control (mostly IEEE 802.11), where it's often necessary to understand the timing relationships between message transmissions. I usually draw something which is a merger of two UML diagram types: message exchange sequence diagram and timing diagram. I drew this using LibreOffice Draw (obviously Visio would have worked as well), but in order to present everything to scale, I had to manually adjust block widths. Are there tools for drawing such timing diagrams of a message exchange?
I do not have a direct answer.
However this scheduling problem occurs in:
-communication protocols
see ITU-T recommendations (standards) or 3GPP protocols
-shared resource access management
-supervision of traffic
Trains on a network (Deutsche Bahn has a lot of know-how there, e. g.)
Telecom networks
Electricity networks
Behind this is scheduling and sharing of a pool of resource for multiple demands.
Visualisation is addressed in SCADA systems (control room supervision).
You may find answers there, with infrastructure operators...
I use PlantUML to generate sequence diagrams (in SVG or PNG) from text descriptions. PlantUML support some other UML diagrams, but I am not sure it will suit your needs.
Thanks Jacek Wytrębowicz , PlantUML looks very nice. I tried recreating the original figure (attached) but it would require further work to be readable. Perhaps my requirement of being drawn to scale (in terms of time) is too stringent.
Thank you Sai R N, as well. Are there any particular modules of Power BI which you are using? Do you have any examples? I searched for "Power BI timing diagram" but couldn't find anything relevant.
