Recently an esteemed Oxbridge academic was attacked for simply raising and writing about the idea that European Empires had a positive as well as a negative effect? 60 Oxbridge academics signed a petition against him, labelling him rascist. Should we really as academics agree with such recourses to discourse?
I believe some topics evoke emotional reactions that defy our understanding of scholarship. For me, any scholarship that expands the boundaries of knowledge must be respected.
My view exactly. But in the UK there are a number of RASCIST constructs, for example, which shut debate down. That does not mean of course that the individual thus defined is rascist, simply attempting to define the world differently or attempting to find historical fact, complexity and truth (within terms) of areas that can be understood in that fashion or re-produce, in one form or another, ideas, etc, not conforming with present-day prejudices.

I was rude to someone on here who was rude to me on this site, but this site admonished me! How strange! How odd! Mind you, I stand by everything I said about him, but in doing so I apparently offended others. Ah, so much for the truth on Research Gate!
