I would like to know if there is a way to determine the state of activated microglia cells in culture? Does anyone know a staining or ELISA/qPCR (or any other) method in which you can show if activated microglia cells are activated in the M1 or M2 phenotype?

I thought there might be some specific protein or receptor expression on the two types.

I know that M1 is mostly pro-inflammatory and secretes IL-1b, IL-6, IL-12, TNF-a and the other anti, secreting IL-10..

The thing is, for my research it may be benificial to show if the cells have polarized towards the M2 state from the M1 state.
