I am trying to measure the soundness of research papers. In order to do that, I first need to know that are they grammatically sound. Do some studies/algorithms exist in literature for this purpose?
I've found various websites for that purpose, but I want to know the underlying concepts. No luck so far.
I think that the only reliable method for determining proper use of grammar is to have people with excellent grammar knowledge read the research paper and identify grammatical issues. English grammar, at least, is too complex for any sort of machine evaluation,
However if all you need is an approximate evaluation of grammar, MS Word can evaluate documents for Flesch reading ease and Flesch-Kincaid grade level. Maybe this is sufficient for your needs.

I am testing with MS-Word functionalities, but was hoping to get some idea about a grammar checker algorithms.

I agree with Michael completely. Although I have been involved in varying degrees with computational linguistics for 45 years, I find no mechanical means that can do even a small percentage of what one brain of a native speaker can do.
And MS Word suggestions are just that--not corrections. Sometimes the advice on MS Word is not good advice. It struggles sometimes to identify proper sentences, marking perfectly good sentences as fragments.
I definitely agree there's no substitute for a human being in these circumstances. But there are some products with better performance than Word. Although I haven't used this, I know several writing specialists who are using Acrolinx. See http://www.acrolinx.com/product-overview/
