I want to decide on choosing a high intensity illumination source for my microscope. My default choice is a 130W mercury lamp but I've heard that brighter LED lamps also exist and if that is the case, LED lamp is preferred for me. I'd appreciate it if you could share any useful information on this.

I recommend LED lamp. LED lamps are brighter than mercury ones. Moreover, every mercury lamp has a limited life time. I have worked with both lamps and I strongly recommend LED lamp.
