My MRes project will involve sampling saproxylic beetles from various dead wood substrate types within Scots Pine plantation stands. I'm curious to know if there are any more efficient or cost effective methods besides standard emergence trapping.
Berlese funnels? Will not work well for whole trees, though I suppose you could build something that large. The funnels that I am familiar with would be good for small pieces under 1/3 meter long and maybe 4 cm diameter. Used more frequently for extracting insects from leaf litter and soil.
