I am studying academic anxiety among adolescents and looking for scales for the same. Also wanted to know whether academic anxiety and test anxiety are synonymous concepts. If not, then what are the differences between the two?
Test anxiety is more specific. Academic anxiety includes several experiences in academic settings, like studying, asking to teachers for doubts, seeking academic help, take notes, etc.
Definitely test anxiety reflects more on some conditions or phases at which person gets anxious which overall academic anxiety related more on scholastic problems or less coping in academic set up.This can be measured by STAI (both for state and trait anxiety)
You might consider checking out the Test Anxiety Inventory (http://www.uiowa.edu/~c07p075e/ClassActivities.pdf), the Scale for Assessing Academic Stress (http://jiom.com.np/index.php?journal=jiomjournal&page=article&op=viewFile&path[]=142&path[]=145), and/or the Academic Anxiety Scale for Children (citation below):
Singh, A. K. & Sen Gupta, A. (1984) Manual for Academic Anxiety Scale for Children. Agra: National Psychological Corporation.
Academic Anxiety Scale by AKP Sinha is a valid scale for measurement of academic anxiety and it will be available in National Psychological Corporation Agra, Uttar Pardesh India.
Although the DASS can be used for research relating to stress, anxiety and depression, STAI (Spielberger) and BAI (Beck) are excellent tools. STAI could be used for the specific situation which maybe helpful. Of course, academic test questionnaires would probably be better such as the Test Anxiety Inventory although I'm unsure about the psychometric properties of the tool.
Do let us know what you decide you use and whether or not it was helpful.
I decided to use the test anxiety inventory by Singh. I will let you know how the intervention on reducing stress in university students around the exam period went and whether the anxiety inventory produced any significant results. Thank you Jason Holland for your suggestion.
