Are students customers?
Finding many colleges / universities / institutions are treating full time undergraduate / college goers as students whereas treating part time study working adults as customers. You can observe their differences in terms of voice tone of the institution workers use, facilities & privileges the working adults enjoy etc.
If we do not consider the type of organization, students are stakeholders (internal). Similarly, they can be treated as customers. Most importantly, we treat them as customers, the product/service delivery will be improved and result oriented.

According to this definition from Wiki - YES! But students are a part of the education system. The feedback student-lecturer is significantly differ from the feedback client-supplier. Therefore, generally speaking, this economical point of view is a mechanical one.
I think there is this one distinction, which differentiates at least some university students from customers of most other services: selectivity in admissions and in retention.
So on the one hand, more and more universities seem keen to attract students with nice facilities, student life, convenient services, and so on. But at the same time, many universities consider that students are privileged to be there, and have to continue to prove that they deserve that privilege. So this other aspect is missing in most other businesses.
A dry cleaner is happy to have your business, with not too many reservations. This can't be said for universities. Makes a big difference, I think.
I'm not a sports fan by any means, but I'll try a sports analogy. In professional sports, the customer is the paying fan. Sports teams need as many such customers as they can attract, and would only turn them away for the most egregious misbehavior.
On the other hand, members of the team need to prove their value in every game. They cannot expect to stay in the team if they don't perform.
Who does the student better resemble? The paying fan, or the team member?
