Doctors and vets undertake vocational qualifications, as do other professionals such as civil engineers. Why is it that some vocational qualifications and careers are perceived as having less academic value than others?
The term "vocational" in this context has had a negative connotation in its history, so some countries have removed the term from their qualifications to avoid the negative stigma (only hands-on without knowledge of theory). The U.S. uses career and technical education and workforce education and development instead. The attached article gives a brief history of the latter in the Introduction for further elaboration.
