I have taught during several years, and I think than now students, or at least most of them, are less dedicated to the every day learning. On the other hand, having conversations on this regards with coleagues from other universities and countries, many of them have the same opinion. What do you think? What is your experience in your teaching practice in Higher Education? Which factors could be influencing?

Interesting question. I guess there is the widespread belief that learners might be challenges when they get to the university and that has impact on their studying.
Of course, they are going through significant changes in their life at that time. New responsibilities, new demands, autonomy, decisions, etc. This is going to affect their work performance too, right?
Sir, there is structural changes in the teachers and learners over the time. Students energies are diverted to unnecessary tasks. Technological advancements have made students over dependent on these gadgets and real learning situations are missing from teaching learning environment.
India and specially north Indian states like Punjab and Haryana are really facing a gigantic problem in context of quality students .... Institution of higher education have taken the form of shops who are selling certificates and degrees. Effects of LPG (1991 policies) on education are clearly visible now..Education is now commodity for students as well as other stakeholders of education.

In my country (Iran), students usually try and study hard during high school and before college. Students are more likely to be free in the university, and the content is easier. Therefore Students work less.
In my teaching experience in the US, indeed they are less focused on academic achievement and more on their social media platforms! They are expanding their digital presence. I am attaching a published article in this regard.

Hello everybody and thank you for your opinions. A partial conclusion looks like to show a more or less general perception (subjective) that currently students study less, comparing with those who studied some time before (relatively in each case). One of the factors, looks to be the use of technology, lets say "in order to have fun" (pointing out: but on the other hand, there exist a spread believe that ICT are making studying easier, or more flexible. That looks like a contradiction, but I think it's not). Other factor, age related changes (but students living before had age related changes too, but probably different historical time can make changes qualitatively different); differences in educational environments (students have, individually more "freedom"; again, historical and social environments can make the difference, even in the meaning of "freedom").
Regarding reading, I think here there is an (from my point of view) obvious factor: the existence of several new tools for storage, transmission and management of information (which, not necessarily, are better in every case). Just we are in presence of a diversity of information representation, but several forms are more used than others, leading to less reading and more, for example, video watching.
In my teaching practice experience in my college, only the top students dedicated to everyday learning. The most influential factor is the lack of employment opportunities that make students less motivated than before to study and compete to get high rates.
In medical profession the problem is more and students are not touching patients and clinical orientation is missing . They are more in theory because multiple choice questions are asked in entrance examination
This depends on the person. In India many of them don't have confidence to get job after there successful completion of there graduation. This may be one reason. Again they depends on the person to person.
In a class full of students, there are some who study alot, some study nominal and some dont. It varies from person to person.
In view of my personal experience, Over all distractors have been increased; social networking sites, androids, selfie, all things eat a lots of time of learners, so they (60-70% of students; if I am not exaggerating) study comparatively less, they don't feel the need to study in detail, attention span has reduced, with increase in screen time, many other activities have comparatively less time to concentrate including learning activities.....!
I believe this could be because of many reasons. One thing what I can point out that the world and the generations are went forward, and now it is in digital world. So the teaching and the education systems also to be in that wold. That would make a different for sure.
Erik Cuevas In fact, it seems that in the most of cases, students are studying less, and in different places that happens for different reasons, but there are a number of evidences, showing that there are several common factors, influencing more than others. And the way that people communicate, the tools they use, and the fact that ICT is not so widely used in teaching and learning, as it could be, are among them. The new generation is talking, communicating in one way, using new constantly changing tools, and most of educators are talking to them in a different way, mostly through outdated means and tools.
