I'm curious as to what you would consider to be a viable or even possible alternative. Canis lupis behavior? Eusocial insect behavior? Imagined Martian behavior? It seems to me that whatever species is considered the basic structure of intelligence would serve the same overall function of mediating between inputs and outputs in a goal-directed manner. I guess the answer partly depends on what the AI is supposed to be for. For catching rabbits on the run, an AI with the logic and intelligence of Chrysippus’s Dog may be enough.

In fact, up to now, "practical" AI has been modelling very simple behaviours, even simpler than canis lupus or collective insect procedures, and even imagined artifacts from SF movies or from scenarios of SF stories. And not only IA practitioners, but even current results in user needs adaptation on the Web, remind several scenes from "Minority Report".

AI is mostly an engineering discipline. The main aims are solving problems, where "intelligence" is needed, by any mean, and not neccesary in every case, acting like human, or any other living being; sometimes more efficient solutions are applied, than those used by humans.

But, out of question, human being is the most developed intelligent system we have known, then in trying to unify and generalize the concept of intelligence, and applying existing, developed during millions if years skills, AI should study, research (in fact, it does) how that happens, and here is where Psychology should have its role.

On the other hand, and back to modelling any non human living being, Intelligence is not a point, mostly it can understood as a continuum, where primary forms can found among first pluricellular animals.

Finally, if "...the same overall function of mediating between inputs and outputs in a goal-directed manner..." is about the stimuli - answer paradigm, I would not be so sure that things happens that way... and here again it depends on which psychological trend one has in mind... I keep waiting further insights...

Rey, there are different ways of mediating between inputs and outputs. Sure, as you say, it could be merely a simple stimulus-response mechanism. But for some beings mediation can also sometimes consist of conscious deliberation. The black-box between input and output may contain various conscious and unconscious processes acting upon a complex input (environmental conditions, broadly construed, plus a recognition of options for action and potential outcomes); the deliberative processes could assign preference orderings to the options and assess likelihoods of success before reaching a decision that eventuates in a behavorial output that is an intelligent action.

However, for some animals very complex behaviors might be completely hardwired and not involve consciousness or deliberation at all, although deterministic mechanisms in the black-box can sometimes accomplish the equivalent of what a conscious deliberative process can. What we do with ballistic calculations involving sines and cosines, some critters just do instinctively. Some of our intelligent engineering solutions derive from attempts to reproduce something that nature has already "solved" via evolution.

Artificial intelligence is the sub field of psychology.

In my opinion, in a future where artificial intelligence is ubiquitous, psychology will remain a resource for helping people cope with the uncertainty and change. As the world becomes increasingly more technological, so does the need for human-based counseling and connection.

@Ajab Ali Lashari. You have found a relationship between AI and Psychology, in this case, the subsetOf relationship. Isn't it?

I think that way, because you said that AI is a SUBfield.

Given this case, every component of AI is a component of Psychology. They inherit Psychology properties.

But, might be you have in mind the idea that AI is a part of Psychology. That is the partOf relationship. In this case this, components of AI don't inherit, in general terms, properties from Psychology.

@Mahesh Kumar. Partially current mission of Psychology is being : "... a resource for helping people cope with the uncertainty and change". But there are other areas where they have an important role, for example, explaining the origin the Psych and how it developed.

And the future role of Psychology depends, among others things, on the place it has in its relation with AI.

I have a Project for Gen. A. I., which outlines and describes the clearest, best-understood and operationalizable (mechanizable/programmable) capabilities and capacities (all related to the best psychology research: that on the Memories). Those operating "alone" is enough to account for what is involved in cognition that is always operating. This would be a tremendous basis for algorithms.

Now, the bad news: ontogeny (development, in particular qualitative changes in cognitions which DO occur and are greatly important (incl. changing types of learning and objects noted in the environment)) : THESE ARE NOT YET KNOWN AND AWAIT DISCOVERY. My writings about Ethogram Theory detail the nature of the pivotal directly observable subtle overt behavior patterns (directly observable, AT LEAST AT THE INCEPTION OF NEW MAJOR WAYS OF PROCESSING). (Eye-tracking technology and comp.-assisted analysis will likely be needed to see these key developments as they occur at key junctures.)

Psychology is central to development of true artificial intelligence/artificial general intelligence. Not only would it help us improve the sophistication of AGI programs, it will become necessary, once we develop AGI, to evaluate the mental health of these new members of our society.
