I have heard conflicting answers on this ranging from "do it to make your research accessible" to "only do it if you're invited" to "don't do it at all." The most moderate advice I saw was "one or two is fine as long as you have several other journal publications."
If the answer depends on my field, I'm in computer science and software engineering.
If you have a lot of pages for the article, book chapter is the only chance to publish your achievements under a single title, because high impact journals having printed versions usually restrict the volume of papers. In general, everything depends on where you are sending your paper. Some book series, e.g. in Springer, are less cited, but others can be more cited like any separate journals. If the book is not in any series, then citing supposed less than in journals, and it would be advantageous to publish your own book even with 3-4 chapters.

Still some very good reasons to publish your research in edited volumes, and in the social sciences and humanities such collections remain common and books are still considered by some the gold standard of academic publication. If you are thinking of contributing a book chapter, however, do take a close look at the publisher, the volume’s editor(s) and the other contributors, as well as at the accessibility anticipated for the book, since these will be reliable indicators of the quality of the forthcoming volume, the ability of readers to find your work and the potential benefits for your research and career.

Yes, chapters in books are regarded as journal articles in my country. Remember they go through a rigorous review process as well and are always at least 20 pages in length.
