I have been trying to measure sulfide using the methylene blue and iodometric method from the 'Standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater.' I have been using a spectrophotometer for the methylene blue method and standards are not quite consistent but linear. The iodometric method has been inconsistent with repeating standards. Anybody have any tips towards help with contamination or consistency?
You may be interested in the Hach Method 8131 for Sulfide which is USEPA Approved for reporting and equivalent to Standard Methods 4500-S2- D (Methylene Blue). The method mentions that high concentrations (>800 ppb) inhibit color development and require sample dilutions. It also mentions excessive sample agitation can contribute to sulfide loss. If sample turbidity is contributing to inconsistencies, the method includes directions for turbidity compensation. You can also purchase the pre-made reagents part number 2244500 at the website www.hach.com or by phone. I will try to provide a link to the method, but it is written to go with Hach instruments which come with the pre-programmed calibration curve.
