Based on the monitoring data of DO and monthly water sampling, we analysed and obtained the annual changes of the ecosystem metabolism and total nitrogen in our study lakes. However, I'm confusing and curious about a phenomenon. Namely, once the ecosystem respiration rose, the total nitrogen deceased, and vise versa. Is there any reference related to this relationship/pattern?

When looking at ecosystem respiration as a single entity, one must begin at the ecosystem's various primary producers' ADP-->ATP biochemical pathway cyclities based on chelate bond availability and ecosystem N::O ratio sustainabilities. Kingdom Archaea and microbial soil/surface-groundwater complexities and the correlation of these variables through a medium such as available energy and energy exerted on the environment. In other words thermodynamics is your major player here. As the ecosystem's primary producers begin reproductive cycles/chemotaxis/phototaxis, etc., increased ATP synthesis will require higher oxygen and other nutrients like organically obtainable N or P.
You are looking at a function of:
- ecosystem nutrient availability [N] + total biomass energy uptake [B] = Change in total available/obtainable energy remaining before the next cycle
I will leave you with those clues as I am sure you can figure out the remaining using the above formula.

Ecosystem metabolism (the combination of primary production and ecosystem respiration) has been demonstrated as a good functional indicator of river health.Rates of ecosystem metabolism can be used to provide a functional assessment of stream health to accompany more traditional structural measures such as water quality and biological indicators. Ecosystem metabolism varies temporally driven by daily, seasonal and annual variation in the primary drivers of light, temperature, nutrients and stream discharge. As such, an increased understanding of the temporal trends in ecosystem metabolism can help determine the most appropriate temporal scale to assess stream health. Higher rates of average annual metabolism occurred at larger stream sites with macrophyte beds and where there was higher water clarity, lower turbidity, higher conductivity and nutrient concentrations. Monthly metabolism estimates were most strongly related to water quality measured during the same calendar month, even when water quality measurements were made after metabolism estimates. Ecosystem metabolism provides a measure of how much organic carbon is produced and consumed in river ecosystems. Organic carbon enters an ecosystem through photosynthesis (plant growth) and the sum of all plant growth is called gross primary production (GPP).Lake ecosystems are a prime example of lentic ecosystems
