Are there any references to insects or animals that can cause damage or weathering to the rock or fossil material? books or paper that would be nice. Thank you very much!
Hello Maya; Look up the Scarab genus Pleocoma. The larvae feed on roots of trees and shrubs in various habitats in Western North America. I have collected them by breaking decomposing granite and finding the grubs in galleries that they have excavated as they move from one root to another. The rock is BEDROCK. Best regards, Jim Des Lauriers
Have a look at the termites which can damage not only the landscape but also human installations now and in the past. The cliffs of rocky coasts are bored by invertebrates, the chemical reaction of bird and bat guano with the calcareous host rocks leading even to new minerals of the phosphate group are largely known.
