I work on the project for better protection of the granitic landscape complex (on about 50 km sq.) with fascinating weathering landforms. Because of that, this area is proclaimed as a Monument of Nature and is under the tentative list of UNESCO. One of the topic in my research is how to propose and establish good and sustainable plan for the monitoring of these unique landforms (hundreds of boulders, large granitoid outcrops etc.). I have some ideas like using LiDAR, drones (for orthophoto and 3D recording), preparing detailed photo-documentation etc., for the following the current state of the landforms and its changes (weathering, anthropogenic destruction, effect of climate changes) through the time. Do you have some experience or recommendations with good practices of long term monitoring of valuable geoheritage?

Ten years ago, there was also a great conference about geosites / geomorphosites in Paris (organised by Christian GIUSTI, université de Paris Sorbonne, and the French Groupe of Geomorphology). May be you can contact him about proceedings or publications after this event.

We've done site condition monitoring for 20 years onlegally protected geosites (ca500 sites), and because we have a standard format to the minitoring of all conservation sites and budget restrictions, we have used repeat photography from fixed locations. Depends on how sophisticated you want this...for dynamic sites like the rivers and coast we are looking for changes in process regime, rather than changes to a channel etc. But for static sites we look for loss , damage or changes in visbility or access. Nearest comparison might be monitoring of granit landscapes and tors. Message me and we can discuss by email. Cheers

Photomonitoring linked to GPS is key nowadays. But you might be interested in a systematic geosite management method that was developed for geo(morpho)logical sites in the UK. It was an adaptation of an approach applied to biological protected areas.

Our study focused on the identification and classification of different geosites according to the IGUL and geomorphosite assessment method modified and adapted to the context studied to identify their scientific, ecological and cultural, aesthetic and economic values. This study thus provided us with a database characterizing the local geodiversity but also the regional level at the Rif region level.
The study involved the use of GIS tools and geostatistical analyzes to establish inventoried geosite models.
