Hi,
I am trying to source an LED module suitable for insertion in the side port (ca. 8 mm diameter) for coaxial illumination in my microscopy setup. I have searched the sites such as Thorlabs and edmund etc (who I am sure sold these in the past), but cannot find them anywhere.
If anyone knows of a supplier they can recommend, please feel free to share here. The sort of thing I am looking for is like those shown at the following link; however, those ones are too large diameter.

You could build your own with 8mm O.D. 0.25 wall stainless tubing, a standard T-1-3/4 (5mm) LED holder, a standard t-1-3/4 LED (your choice of color), and a resistor to control the brightness. Of course you'll also need a soldering iron, solder, maybe some epoxy and some heat-shrink tubing to get it all assembled. Farnell should have most of the parts except maybe the stainless tubing. Size the resistor based on the power supply you plan to use (your source for the 10mm are 6 Volt), I'd suggest 5V so you can power it from 5V logic circuits if desired, the forward voltage of the LED and the maximum current you want (brightness). Lots of standard LEDs are rated at 20mA with a 1.2V forward voltage. Subtract the forward voltage from the supply voltage and use that number and the current to calculate the resistor (3.8V/0.02A=190Ohms). A 220Ohm would work fine and give you some tolerance for power supply fluctuations. Once you get it all together, you could drive it with an Arduino to control the brightness with pulse width modulation. If you are are not so inclined to construct you own, maybe you could find some electronics hobbyist that would do it for you. It should be a fairly straight forward project that wouldn't require a lot of experience.
